Getting married in the heart of Puerto Vallarta creates a completely different destination wedding experience. This Guadalupe Church wedding in Puerto Vallarta combined a traditional church ceremony downtown with a resort reception at the Sheraton, bringing together two very different sides of the city in one wedding day.
From the historic streets surrounding the church to the tropical atmosphere of the reception, the changing locations gave us an incredible variety of moments and backgrounds to photograph throughout the celebration.
A Wedding at Guadalupe Church in Puerto Vallarta
The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most recognizable landmarks in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Located in the historic center, its architecture and central location create a beautiful setting for couples who want a traditional church ceremony as part of their destination wedding in Mexico.
For photography, the experience extends beyond the ceremony itself. Stepping outside the church places the couple directly in the heart of Puerto Vallarta, surrounded by historic architecture, cobblestone streets, local life, and some of the city's most characteristic scenery.
A Traditional Church Ceremony in Mexico
A church wedding brings its own rhythm to the day. The ceremony is naturally more formal and documentary, so our priority is to photograph the traditions, reactions, family, and important moments without becoming a distraction.
Once the ceremony ends, the atmosphere changes completely. Congratulations outside the church, family photographs, and the first moments of the newlyweds together create a natural transition into the celebration that follows.
Wedding Portraits in Downtown Puerto Vallarta
One of the biggest advantages of a Guadalupe Church wedding is its downtown location. The surrounding streets offer a completely different backdrop from the beaches and resorts usually associated with Puerto Vallarta weddings.
Colorful architecture, cobblestone streets, urban textures, and the atmosphere of the historic center can all become part of the wedding story. Even a short portrait session after the ceremony can create photographs that immediately feel connected to Puerto Vallarta.
From Guadalupe Church to the Sheraton Reception
After the ceremony downtown, the celebration continued at the Sheraton in Puerto Vallarta. Moving from the traditional atmosphere of the church to a resort reception gave the wedding two distinct personalities while keeping everything within the city.
It's also one of the reasons this type of wedding produces such a varied gallery. Historic architecture and city streets define the first part of the day, while tropical surroundings, ocean views, reception details, and evening celebrations take over later.
A Sheraton Puerto Vallarta Wedding Reception
The reception is where the formal rhythm of the ceremony gives way to dinner, speeches, music, and celebration. We continue photographing the important moments, but also focus heavily on the interactions happening between guests and the energy of the party.
Before everyone enters the reception, we also photograph the room and wedding details whenever the timeline allows. Florals, tables, stationery, lighting, and personal touches are all part of the complete story of the day.
Planning a Church and Resort Wedding in Puerto Vallarta
When the ceremony and reception take place at different venues, transportation and timing become especially important. It's worth leaving enough time for guests to exit the church, family photographs to be completed, and everyone to travel comfortably to the reception.
We also recommend building a little flexibility into the photography timeline. Downtown traffic, group photographs, and changing natural light can all affect the schedule, and a small buffer helps keep the experience relaxed.
Puerto Vallarta Catholic Wedding Photography
Photographing a traditional church ceremony requires a different approach from photographing a beach or resort ceremony. We work discreetly, respect the ceremony and the space, and anticipate important moments rather than directing what is happening.
Later in the day, we can shift toward more intentional portraiture and then back into documentary coverage as the reception begins. That combination creates a gallery that preserves both the traditions of the ceremony and the atmosphere of the celebration.
Guadalupe Church Wedding Photographer in Puerto Vallarta
At Underground Studio PV, we photograph weddings throughout Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding destination wedding region. Our approach combines documentary storytelling with refined portraiture, adapting to each part of the wedding rather than treating the entire day the same way.
This celebration, from Guadalupe Church in downtown Puerto Vallarta to the reception at the Sheraton, is a perfect example of how a destination wedding can combine Mexican tradition, the character of the city, and a resort celebration in one complete wedding story.
